The Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships 2022 was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from the 24th of February till the 3rd of March of 2022. The 2020 and 2021 edition of this Major Competition was cancelled due to Covid-19, and we are excited that it has resumed this year!
In the Cadet (Under 17) Men's Épée Individual Event, from SGF we have 16 year old Julien Kenneth Lim who qualified and will be representing Hong Kong, and 15 year old Matthew Pang who qualified and will be representing Singapore. This was both of our boys first time at a Major Competition.
47 fencers from 17 different countries participated in the Cadet Men's Épée Individual Event.
Matthew won 2 out 6 bouts in his pools. Winning Samizoda Nazirmad from Tajikistan 5-2 and Hazazi Ahmed from Saudi Arabia 5-2. Losing to Huynh Gia Huy from Vietnam 1-5, Kamalov Ruslan from Kyrgyzstan 1-5, Keskes Ahmed from Oman 4-5 and Tinnikov Georgiy from Kazakhstan 0-5.
Julien won 4 out of 6 bouts in his pools. Victories over Bobokhonov Nazar from Tajikistan 5-1, Al Fadaaq Jaber from Qatar 5-3, Mirshafiei Seyed Mohammad from Iran 5-2 and Vemani Lokesh from India 5-4. His 2 losses were to Mustafin Gabidin from Kazakhstan 3-5 and Timurov Meyirkhan from Kazakhstan 2-5.
Matthew and Julien both advanced into the Direct Elimination round.
In the Table of 64, Matthew fenced off with Kanggabam Kane Singh from India, and finished 38th overall after a 11-15 bout.
Julien earned a bye into the Table of 32, where he fenced with Hazazi Ahmed from Saudi Arabia, winning 15-10 and progressing into the Table of 16. In the Table of 16 he was faced with seeded 2 Kamalov Ruslan from Kyrgyzstan, Julien fenced fearlessly and earned his place in the Top 8 with a well fought 15-13 bout. Next up was Almheiri Masoud from United Arab Emirates, focused and clear, Julien breezed through with a 15-9 win to earn himself a place in the Semi Finals, where he eventually won the Bronze Medal for Cadet Men's Epee Individual in the Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships 2022!
